We must help others, listen to others, respect others, heal others and above all, love others.

Ly Dumas works towards a world where the less fortunate are given a chance at a dignified life on their land. Therefore, the Jean Félicien Gacha Foundation was created to help young Cameroonians to not submit themselves to the risks of crossing an ocean and the perils of an uncertain and often humiliating future. To motivate them to ensure their livelihoods in their own country in an honourable manner, thus contributing to their own and the general well-being of the local communities.

She wishes to encourage the younger generation to feel pride in their culture and roots and assume responsibility for their transmission and survival. The young people are inspired to pass on ancient know-how, preserve tradition and promote African innovations.

Thirty years ago, the hill and the village where the Foundation dwells were a desert. They are now a beautiful garden-like environment where various institutions provide schooling, training and vocational counselling for the next generation and where they can live together in harmony and reconciliation.

Her mother used to tell her: “When you speak, let it be to say what you would like to hear, and never to be hurtful; but at the same time, always try to tell the truth, to be fair.”

Her father, a tireless worker with a powerful, determined gaze, had the soul of a great politician. Proud of his country, he was instrumental in its emancipation. A senior civil servant, he held the position of territorial administrator: he developed the planning of many new towns, including Mbouda, and was one of the first mayor of Bafoussam before independence.

He was erudite, intelligent and selfless, qualities he passed on to his children. His whole life could actually be summarised in the moto he lived by: “We must help others, listen to others, respect others, heal others and above all, love others”.

So, in 2002, animated by her personal view on life and the memory of her father, Ly Dumas set up the Jean-Félicien Gacha Foundation on the historic part of the Boutanga estate, where the land is crisscrossed by an ancient trench, dug by the Bangangte people during their battles against the Bamum. Ly Dumas so inspired by her father’s words, gave them in heritage to her Foundation, they set the core values by which its employees live by, beneficiaries receive and actions are led, thus they pass on and emulate into the world.

The years have passed, and the Jean-Félicien Gacha Foundation celebrated its twentieth anniversary. What a great story!
In two decades, the Foundation has become a major NGO, an ecosystem based on the circular transmission of knowledge to all, no matter who they are or where they come from. Each participant finds their own place. They are able to make a living and support their families in their native land, while taking up the core values received at foundation.

I. Education and training

A visionary spirit, Ly Dumas holds education closest to her heart. Consequently, it is probably the domain in which the Foundation Jean-Félicien Gacha has invested the most. She has tirelessly helped thousands of children and adults become literate.

Ly and Frederic Dumas brought in experts from all over the world to help train the local population. Afterwards, five kindergartens and two primary schools were built. Giving a future, new opportunities to children, breaking the fatality of illiteracy, and dispensing the essential education to fight early marriage changed the lives of the communities.

The Foundation scholarship holders are graduating from prestigious Universities in Cameroon and abroad. Others, attending vocational training sessions, are becoming tailors, farmers, builders, carpenters, plumbers, bead artisans, chefs etc.

Hence, since 2002:

  • 100 young people have been trained
  • 250 young people took a vocational training course
  • 200 scholarships were granted. A fair amount of these to young girls otherwise promised to early wedding.
  • 50 young people are integrated professionally within the Foundation
  • More than 400 children attended primary schools supported by the Foundation
  • 29 students have been trained in the Foundation’s wood and metal carpentry, beadwork and sewing workshops; at Villa Boutanga, young people have been prepared for the hotel/restaurant industry
  • More than a 1000 children attended the cultural activities of the Centre des Cultures JLD: guided tours, conferences, fun activities, school support, Poetry reading and writing, discovery of craftmanships, languages (international ones as well as vernacular), awakening to Cameroonian culture through open days…

II. Culture and Craftmanship

Ly Dumas has at heart to preserve and widely share the artistic heritage of the African continent. Therefore, one of the primary manifestations of African culture, tradition and soul, “Beading”, has been revived and is a focus activity of the Foundation. Some of the most prestigious museums and exhibitions in Africa and Europe have displayed the remarkable achievements of Bangoulap’s workshops. Throughout her life, Ly Dumas has been campaigning for the recognition of African craftsmanship, being one of its most important ambassadors.

III. Health and Social

Generosity and love define the JFG Foundation President,
Ly Dumas who graciously bears the title of Queen Mother.
Even before the Foundation was born, health was one of Ly Dumas’s main concerns as she constantly supported the Bangoulap Health Center and later the neighbouring hospitals. For instance, infancy mortality at Maka, a nearby village, was very high, reduced significantly after the NGO started to help.

Through its network of partners and donors, the Foundation distributes medical equipment and supports the local medical infrastructures. At the request of a local actor, communities are educated on topics such as young girls, early marriage, child nutrition, birth control and the prevention and treatment of typhoid fever and cholera.

The Foundation also coordinates healthcare and medical interventions, by creating partnerships between European hospitals and neighbouring Universities and medical centres and hospitals. The latest testimony being the humanitarian mission in partnership with the Dexeus MujerFoundation. Twelve of the best gynaecologists in the world practiced free surgeries on 72 women, changing their lives for ever.

IV. Agriculture and Environment

Passionately loving People and Nature, Ly Dumas protects all living beings, hugs children with tenderness and greets people with a huge smile. She is always grateful for the miracle of life and the flawless beauty of nature.

The Foundation contributes significantly to preserving the environment, agriculture, animal husbandry, tourism, solar power, etc. The foundation nursery houses 150 different species of plants, several hundred shrubs and a large culture of citronellas and verbenas. A team of gardeners and farmers, through ethical farming, maintains these spaces and organizes training.

Hundreds varieties of medicinal plants are grown on the Foundation’s grounds and 30 beehives are hosted in its fields. A laboratory equipped with a solar-powered dryer and extractors allows the transformation of these plants and honeycombs into herbal teas, decoctions, soaps, essential oils, and honey.
